About Holly Feit
“My love for Physical Education started at community college, when I was a Health and Wellness major,” says Holly Feit. “From there I got more into fitness, and it really helped me personally.”
After earning her associate degree, she decided to pursue a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education.
“I chose Russell Sage College because I like the small community,” she continues.
She says she’s become even more excited about a career in Physical Education since starting Sage, “which shows me I’m in the right place.”
Adapted Physical Education courses focused on PE for children with disabilities have been her favorite classes within her major.
“I feel like It’s very important,” she says, “and Professor Kelly Brock has been a role model to me.”
She’s also enjoyed courses outside of her major, like Innovating to Impact. This signature class in Sage’s general education program examines complex issues through an interdisciplinary lens and a collaborative service learning project.
Holly’s class worked with refugee support organizations and developed I Belong in Albany, a professionally printed children’s coloring book with drawings of local places. Their hope is that children who receive the coloring books will enjoy a creative activity while learning about their new home.
“The goal of the coloring book really aligns with my goal as a future teacher,” she says.
As part of that class, she volunteered at a weekly playgroup at the Refugee Welcome Center in Albany, and said this experience with preschoolers complemented her Physical Education fieldwork and student teaching with elementary, middle and high school students.
“I’ve learned to interact with children of all ages,” she says.
Holly has a semester of student teaching to go before she completes her bachelor’s degree in Physical Education. She’ll then be eligible for initial certification to teach PE in New York state, kindergarten through high school.
Right now, any and all grade levels appeal to her.
“I just love working with kids,” she says, “and I love Physical Education.”
