The Russell Sage Nursing Career Start-up Grant

Newly working nurses who graduate from Russell Sage College have the opportunity to apply for the Russell Sage Nursing Career Start-up Grant.

Starting with December 2024 Russell Sage Nursing graduates and beyond, alumni can apply for the grant after their first full year working for a qualifying Capital Region acute care hospital.

The first round of grants will be distributed in April 2026 to between 40 and 50 applicants.

Why?

Starting with the graduating class of December 2024, the grant program encourages Russell Sage B.S. in Nursing graduates (including graduates of the accelerated program) to stay in the Capital Region to begin their careers, supporting the nursing pipeline in our surrounding community.

What?

After graduating from the B.S. in Nursing program at Russell Sage and gaining employment as a Registered Nurse (RN) at a qualifying Capital Region facility, nursing alumni can apply for the grant for up to three years (after year one, year two, and year three of their employment at that facility). If selected, they would receive an increasing amount based on their years of service:

  • After Year 1: $2,000
  • After Year 2: $3,000
  • After Year 3: $4,000

The grant can be used toward expenses associated with their education or any other purpose of their choosing. It is meant to help nurses who commit to serving in the Capital Region get a good start during the early years of their careers.

Where Do I Have to Work to Qualify?

To qualify, applicants must be employed as nurses in a Capital Region “acute care facility” (hospitals providing acute care). For this program, the Capital Region includes Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Saratoga, and Warren counties.

How to Apply

Application details will be released when the program opens for the first round of eligible applicants to apply in January 2026. Watch this space for details.
