Approval is another step forward for the college as it unifies its Albany and Troy campuses under one name.

TROY & ALBANY, NEW YORK — The New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Board of Regents has approved The Sage Colleges’ petition to change the institution’s corporate name to Russell Sage College. The name change is part of the college’s strategic plan, which includes the unification of its Albany and Troy campuses as a coeducational institution that offers undergraduate and graduate degrees.

The name change from The Sage Colleges to Russell Sage College is part of a strategic plan approved by the college’s board of trustees in March 2019. The change will be effective July 1, 2020.

Russell Sage College is the institution’s original name, and the return to this name underscores how the changes at Sage keep abreast of the times while remaining true to the college’s founding values.

“NYSED approval of our charter change, is another exciting step forward for our college and our new vision,” said Sage’s President Christopher Ames. “We offer students strong professional preparation in a small college environment that is affordable and highly supportive of student success. These are attributes the Sage community lives and breathes and we are excited to spread awareness of what we have to offer—as Russell Sage College.”

Other Elements of Russell Sage College’s Strategic Plan/Next Steps

  • Launch of the the Women’s Institute at Russell Sage College, which will offer public programs, panels, conferences, and community partnerships—with a focus on constructive dialogue about contemporary women’s issues. The institute will open in September 2020 with a symposium on the centennial of women’s suffrage.
  • The introduction of Sage THRIVE, a core value and signature program that builds on the college’s reputation in the health sciences to develop curricular and extracurricular themes related to wellness and well-being.
  • The introduction of one general education curriculum for all undergraduate students on both campuses. The new program incorporates wellness, prioritizes intellectual exploration and promotes strong connections within the Sage community.
