The Legend of Sleepy Hollow BannerThe Headless Horseman has such an enduring place in regional lore that he is memorialized in a 1939 government-funded mural located in the Troy post office. This month, he comes to life in the Theatre Institute at Sage’s production of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at the Schacht Fine Arts Center on the Russell Sage College campus, 65 1st Street, Troy, New York.  “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” opens on Oct. 4 and runs through Oct. 13. It is recommended for ages 8 through adult. Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for children, senior citizens and students.

The production is an adaptation of Washington Irving’s classic spooky tale set in the quaint village of Sleepy Hollow in New York state’s Hudson Valley, where the legend of a mighty headless horseman captures the imaginations of the people. When humble schoolteacher Ichabod Crane vies for the hand of beautiful Katrina Van Tassel, his rival Brom Bones protests — but it is ultimately the Horseman who will decide their fate.

The Theatre Institute planned the production to coincide with a slate of events occurring throughout New York’s Hudson Valley – where Washington Irving had a home – to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Associate Professor of English Shealeen Meaney, Ph.D., will lead a pre-performance discussion about Washington Irving and the Hudson Valley on Saturday, Oct. 5, 2019, at 7 p.m., in the Art Wing of Schacht Fine Arts Center. There is no charge for the pre-performance discussion.

Other productions this season at the Theatre Institute at Sage include “Oliver!” (Dec. 4–15, 2019); “The Diary of Anne Frank” (Feb. 5–16, 2020); “Calvin Berger” (Feb. 21-23, 2020); “The Wolves” (April 2–5, 2020); and a Theatre Institute original, “Benjamin Franklinstein Lives!” (May 28–June 12, 2020), based on the books by Matthew McElligott and Larry Tuxbury and from the team that created “Backbeard the Musical!”
