Noted author Rachel E. Gross will speak at the April 12 mini-conference, “Women’s Health: Transforming Medical Education Across Disciplines.”

A leading author on gender bias in medicine will speak at “Women’s Health: Transforming Medical Education Across Disciplines,” a free in-person and livestreamed mini-conference on April 12 from 11 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at Russell Sage College.

The mini-conference, organized by The Women’s Institute at Russell Sage College, will be held in Bush Memorial on the college’s Troy campus and will cover the history of women’s health, how women can make the most of their medical provider visits, and the future of medical advocacy. The in-person event is sold out, but the public can still register to receive livestreaming information.

Rachel Gross, who will offer opening remarks, is an award-winning science journalist and the author of the 2022 book Vagina Obscura: An Anatomical Voyage. Gross has served as an affiliate scholar for The Women’s Institute at Russell Sage College this academic year and led programming focused on gender bias in medicine. 

Panelists for the event include:

  • Tori Ford, founder and executive director of Medical Herstory, a not-for-profit organization advancing gender health equity and undoing stigma through storytelling, patient advocacy, and medical education.
  • Wendy Kline, Ph.D., Dema G. Seelye Chair in the History of Medicine at Purdue University and an internationally recognized scholar in the history of medicine, women’s health, and childbirth.
  • Dr. Maria Uloko, a urologist who has revolutionized the field of comprehensive sexual health with expertise spanning a range of treatments that address the needs of all genders.
  • Sophia Wallace, a conceptual artist and intimate justice advocate who works at the intersection of bodies and ethics.

After the public event, a practicum will be held for health sciences students from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
