Presentations Now Available on Facebook Live Were Part of The Joy of Troy’s “Tuesdays With the Doctor” Series

Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy Katrin Ramsey, DSc and Physical Therapy students at Russell Sage College led online presentations focused on health and wellness for The Joy of Troy Seventh-day Adventist Church in fall 2023.

The presentations were part of the church’s monthly Tuesdays with the Doctor series, which hosts health care professionals on the last Tuesday of every month.

Students from Russell Sage College’s Doctor of Physical Therapy program presented “Breathwork for Stress Reduction” on November 28, “10 Exercises for Shoulder Strength” on October 24, and “Pain in the Neck” (addressing neck discomfort) on September 26.

Ramsey teaches second-year doctor of Physical Therapy candidates and said service learning activities like this help students further develop the communication and active listening skills they will use in third-year clinical experiences and professional practice. The students gained experience fielding unexpected questions and conveying information in a telehealth environment. They also developed presentation techniques to educate patients and deliver “in-service” educational presentations for colleagues.

Student Sara Pipino said she appreciated being able to step away from her textbooks.

“Opportunities like this to volunteer for our community are a great way to keep us connected with the reality of PT practice,” she said. “It is a great way for us to think about this information from a ‘civilian’s’ perspective, and find ways to connect with patients. Knowing that we helped many people in our community decrease their pain is a great feeling.”

This latest collaboration with The Joy of Troy emerged from two health fairs Sage’s Physical Therapy department organized in the church’s Lansingburgh, New York, neighborhood in 2022. Ramsey anticipates additional community collaborations in 2024.
