Eddie Glaude

Dr. Eddie Glaude, the New York Times bestselling author of the 2020 book “Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own,” will speak May 13 at the Russell Sage College 2023 commencement ceremony at MVP Arena.

Glaude is the James S. McDonnell Distinguished University Professor and chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University and a prominent scholar, author and commentator who examines the American experience. “Begin Again” was named to several best book lists in 2020 and received the 2021 Stowe Prize, awarded by Harriet Beecher Stowe Center to a work that illuminates social justice issues in the United States.

He is frequently called upon as an expert by the media, including serving as a columnist for TIME and as an MSNBC contributor.

“Professor Glaude will be an inspiration for our students as they take their place in the world and strive to make a difference,” said Sage President Christopher Ames. “He brings to contemporary discussions of race and community a distinctive, compelling and historically informed perspective that is badly needed. We are delighted to honor him at Russell Sage College’s commencement.”

Glaude is the author of five previous books on Black communities, race and democracy as well as on religion and philosophy.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Morehouse College, a master’s degree in African-American studies from Temple University and a doctorate in religion from Princeton University.

Sage will award an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters to Glaude in recognition of his extraordinary contributions to an understanding of contemporary America rooted in the rich contexts of history, literature and religion.

Sage’s 2023 commencement is on Saturday, May 13, at 6 p.m. The ceremony will be held at MVP Arena, 51 South Pearl Street in Albany. More information is available at Sage.edu/commencement.
