Physical Therapy

The Department of Physical Therapy offers an Entry Level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree, a transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, and an undergraduate BS degree in Health Sciences.

Dr. Jim Brennan presented two papers at recent conferences: Critical Physical Therapy was presented at the Medical Anthropology Conference in September 2009 and Women with Chronic Pain as Time Travelers was presented at the Society for Disabilities Studies in June 2009.

Dr. Laura Gras, along with Dr. Mary Rea from the Biology Program at Sage and researchers at RPI's Lighting Research Institute received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to conduct their study, The Effectiveness and Feasiblity of a Lighting Solution that can Potentially Reduce the Risk of Falls among Older Adults.

Professor Gabriele Moriello and PT alum, Matthew Frear and Kristin Seaburg published The recovery of running ability in an adolescent male post traumatic brain injury: A case report in the June issue of the Journal of Neurologic Physical Therapy. She also published Oral History in the Classroom: Fostering positive attitudes toward older adults and the aging process along with colleagues Mary Ligon, Katie Ehlman and E.A. Welleford in the March issue of the Journal of Aging, Humanities and Arts.

Dr. Laura Gras will be presenting at the New York Physical Therapy Association's 2009 Conference and Exhibition, Improvements in Balance and Gait with Therapeutic Riding: A Case Report with PT alumni Catherine Ungermann and Generalizability of the Nintendo WiiFit with PT students Elizabeth Hine and Audrey Hummer which will also be presented at APTA's Combined Sections Meeting in San Diego, CA in February. She will also be presenting The Use of a Lighted Tilted Frame with Two Individuals who had a Cerebral Vascular Accident at APTA's Combined Sections Meeting with PT alumni Janelle Martin and Tracy Surprenant.

Two physical therapy faculty members recently published books. Dr. James Brennan published a book, Chronic Pain and Working Women in Berkshire County: Towards a Critical Physical Therapy and Dr. Esther Haskvitz co-authored the textbook, Applied Sports Medicine for Coaches.

Sage's DPT Program:

  • Prepares physical therapists who are exemplary, autonomous practitioners.
  • Provides hands-on learning experiences with patients in labs.
  • Graduates have a 100% ultimate pass rate on the NPTE (National Physical Therapy Examination) licensing exam.
  • Graduates pursuing employment have a 100% job placement as physical therapists immediately following graduation.
